Alkyd Resins

Long Oil Alkyds have good gloss, gloss retention, good flow and levelling properties. High durability on exposures of exterior decorative and industrial surfaces, very good adhesion to metals, wood, cloth and paper makes it an ideal resin for high gloss enamels and printing inks.

Solubility : Soluble in Xylene, Toluene LSN, Mineral Turpentine, LSN, Cellusolve, Acetate Esters, Ketones, Dipentine, Insoluble in Alcohols

Applications : High quality gloss enamels, decorative finishes, furniture finishes, gloss varnishes with reduced phenolics for printing inks.

Medium oil length alkyds have quick drying characteristics and high gloss. Hardness and adhesion of the film are excellent and these properties can be further enhanced by incorporating rosinated phenolic resins.

Compatibility : Compatible with reduced phenolics, oil soluble maleic resins, oil soluble pure phenolics, ester gum, drying and bodied oils, etc.

Solubility : Soluble in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, Light Solvent Naptha (LSN), Acetate esters, Mineral Oil Turpentine (MTO), Cellosolve, insoluble in alcohols.

Applications :

• Quick drying finishes, furniture coatings, primers and undercoats, stoving enamels*.
• *Stoving with 0.03% cobalt & 0.3% lead at 150°C for 30 minutes yields excellent films.

Short oil alkyds offer good adhesion and anticorrosive properties. Good levelling properties, mar-proofness and hardness render it useful for economic industrial finishes.

Applications : Industrial finishes, furniture and machine paints, economic stoving enamels, undercoats and primers.

Medium oil alkyd resins that are modified with rosin to give faster drying and improve hardness. They are soluble in both aliphatic type solvents (white spirit) and more strong solvents like xylene or toluene. Rosinated alkyd are mainly used in furniture coating where good gloss and hardness is needed. It also finds application in general purpose enamel & paints.

Fast drying chain stopped oil alkyd resins are short oil air drying resins where the oil length is shortened by chain stopping with benzoic acid. These have a better controlled molecular weight distribution and better durability. These are used in high quality fast drying paints and the soya variant is used in automotive refinishing paints.
